I thought I would post this bold abstract as we approach the new year. I hope this last day of 2011 finds you in peace with the past and hopeful for a great 2012. Let's make it a fresh and new beginning, like a brand new white canvas, and fill it with color and light!

Rooster in progress...by Kay Wyne

This contemporary palette knife painting is in progress.....probably 95% complete. I was very generous with the paint yesterday (I have the cad red in my hair to prove it!) The paint is layered on the canvas with the palette knife. I need the paint to set up before I do anything else. This rooster is on a 24" x 24" gallery wrap canvas, and will not need a frame. I hope to put the finishing touches on this guy today, then sign him and name him! Thanks for viewing.....Kay

Birch Tree textured paintings by Niki Gulley

5x7 birch study II ©2011 Niki Gulley
textured painting on board

I painted these autumn birches with extremely thick paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. This birch series can be propped up on an easel without a frame, or I have a 5" black frame with a gold inner lip or a solid gold plein air frame that sets the small painting off beautifully. To purchase or see examples framed, e-mail Niki Gulley.

Pictured above, Monday's 5" x 7" birches next to Wednesday's and today's birches.

The 5" x 7" and 12" x 12" squares look great hung in pairs and threes! To see more of my 12" x12" and large scale contemporary birch and aspen tree paintings, visit nikigulley.com/?page_id=1343

Christmas Camel by Janet Bludau

5" x 7"
Oil on Board

Earlier this week I posted last year's Christmas Card Painting, The Ewe.
This is my card for 2011.  My daughter was in Morocco back in September and I enclosed a photo of her sitting on a REAL camel, inside the card.
The Ewe was done entirely with a palette knife as I recall.  The camel is mainly brushed but the details are applied with the palette knife.

Moon light rising oil landscape painting by Becky Joy

Rising Moon oil 6"x6"  $95. bid on ebay.
Hi everyone, I guess I'm getting in the mood for nightscapes. I painted this one today while playing with color. I've always loved those orange rising moons. It was difficult to photograph this painting. The blues always photograph lighter causing the orange moon not to glow as much in the photo as it does in the painting. I tried photographing it again, but came up with the same results. Blue I have found always causes a problem in photography.
Tomorrow I will post my nightscape, hopefully.  I have an online session of workshops starting in Jan., 4 weeks for $150. Check it out at Art Workshops Online.
Talk to you all tomorrow.

Fall Romance Original oil Painting landscape by Karen Tarlton

Fall Romance
20x24
Oil
"Artists who seek perfection in everything are those who cannot attain it in anything."
I believe this goes for many aspects of life. In painting, it took me many years to learn not to over work a piece. I like a loose, painterly look and so I don't "tighten" it all up but seek balance instead.

Enjoying the Holidays by Pamela Blaies

13" x 20"
Oil on Canvas

I've had a great Christmas and am headed out the door to visit with my side of the family for more Christmas festivities.  Here is a study I did yesterday.  My daughter was posing for me and I was trying to get her to sit on the couch with her Dad's guitar.  Well, she's really small and the guitar was just too big for her to be comfortable holding, so I told her to take a break while I grabbed some coffee.  I came back to catch this vision and promptly ditched the guitar idea.  I can't wait to be able to start working on the bigger painting when I get back this weekend - I'm very excited about it!

I love to share my art and inspiration.  Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

plein air oil Landscape painting at Crystal Cove, CA by BECKY JOY

Crystal Cove Beach House 6"x6" plein air oil landscape
Ebay $95.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. I haven't posted for several days. My son and his family came to town from Austin, TX. I had both of my kids and their spouses and my 5 grandkids here for Christmas, all of us together. We had a great time. Consequently, I didn't work at all this last week. So, now it's back into the swing of things.

This is a painting I painted about 3 months ago in California at Crystal Cove in Laguna Beach. I painted one earlier in the morning in the fog. This one was painted from the same spot looking up after the fog cleared. The first painting was used in the advertising for Randy Higbee's 6" Squared show this month. Below is the ad with Crystal Cove Fog.

I'll close for now and get back to work tomorrow.

"Life on the Ledge", a new Grand Canyon painting by Kathryn Willis

Life on the Ledge, 30x30" oil on wrapped canvas, by Kathryn Willis

Last summer we camped at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon on our way north to Idaho. This studio painting was done from a plein air piece I did one afternoon just steps away from our campsite. A pretty amazing place! This viewpoint looks south and the mountains in the background are the San Francisco Peaks, and where I live in Flagstaff on the other side.

PASTORAL LANDSCAPE, IMPRESSIONIST OIL PAINTING by Tom Brown

Simplicity is the essence of beauty.

I often begin by looking for the strong abstract design of the landscape. And sometimes that says all that’s necessary to capture the true feeling of the moment.

I could have carried this further, adding much more detail and careful brush strokes. But I don’t think that would not have improved the impact of the painting. This says it all. Enjoy!

Textured Bluebonnet oil painting series by Niki Gulley

"Texas Treats" ©2011 Niki Gulley
12" x 12" textured oil painting on canvas

I painted these Texas bluebonnets and with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I've painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 and 1/2" deep stretcher bars so that the paintings can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.

These 12" x 12" squares look great in pairs and threes! Hang them horizontally to fill space, vertically for a small wall or diagonally to lead your eye upwards, such as in a staircase.  If interested in purchasing any of these bluebonnets, e-mail Niki Gulley.

Pictured above are today's "Texas Treats IV" next to Wednesday's "Texas Treats" and Monday's "Texas Treats V" canvas.

The "Texas Treats" series hung vertically.

The "Texas Treats" series hung diagonally.

Can't Wait for Christmas! by Pamela Blaies

12" x 16"

It's already December 22nd!  Time is flying by and I still have some preparing and framing to do for a few paintings that sold as last minute Christmas sales and deliveries for January exhibitions.

However, I am still finding a little time for painting.  The composition and colors look good in this study - I just love copper.  I might change a few things in the final painting and may even make more than one painting from this still life, with different cropping.

I set up a station in my studio for my daughter to paint with me and that was fun.  Looking forward to spending Christmas with my family!

If you missed my Christmas Painting video - click HERE to watch it.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
